Lawrence W. Reed to be honored by the Republic of Poland

Lawrence W. Reed, Interim President of the Foundation for Economic Education (FEE), will be honored with the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland, a prestigious award previously bestowed upon such figures as Queen Elizabeth II and President Ronald Reagan.

Reed’s extensive career in political and economic affairs spans 87 countries on six continents since 1985. As a freelance journalist, he reported on significant global events, including hyperinflation in South America, black markets behind the Iron Curtain, and civil conflicts in countries like Nicaragua and Mozambique. His involvement with the Polish anti-communist underground in 1986, which resulted in his detainment by communist authorities, exemplifies his commitment to freedom.

“This is an award I shall proudly display as long as I live,” said Reed. “I love this beautiful country nearly as much as my own. I love the courage I found in the hearts of so many in 1986 and during many subsequent visits.”

Wayne Olson, Chairman of the Foundation for Economic Education, lauded Reed’s dedication, stating, “I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this award than Larry Reed. His work on behalf of the Polish independence movement during the Cold War shows that his love of freedom goes beyond mere words and is reflected in his actions. Larry embodies the principles and spirit of FEE.”

The award ceremony will take place in Warsaw on Saturday, November 11, coinciding with Poland’s Independence Day celebrations.

Lawrence W. Reed has served as FEE’s president from 2008 to 2019, as President Emeritus from 2019 to 2023, and currently as Interim President. Reed also serves the Foundation as its Humphreys Family Senior Fellow and Ron Manners Global Ambassador for Liberty. He previously served for 21 years as president of the Mackinac Center for Public Policy in Midland, Michigan. He taught economics full-time from 1977 to 1984 at Northwood University in Michigan and chaired its department of economics from 1982 to 1984.
